BMW 320d EfficientDynamics
Review of the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics
Model/Engine size: 320d ED
Fuel economy combined: 68.9 mpg
The BMW 320d EfficientDynamics combines 68.9 mpg and 109 g/km CO2 emissions with a 0-62 mph time of 8.0 seconds and 137 mph.
It’s also a great car to drive, complete with rear-wheel drive and an entertaining chassis. Its performance statistics are excellent, and it ticks all the right boxes for the fleet market, with an aspirational badge and image. It’s a ‘normal’ car rather than a ‘green’ car but it’s also incredibly efficient – without any drawbacks, therefore it encapsulates everything we want in a car.
BMW has been applying its EfficientDynamics technologies to the 3 Series since 2007 with great fuel consumption resulting. However never being one to sit on its laurels, BMW has continued to refine the concept and the latest changes allow the 3 Series to claim another landmark; the first car in the premium sector to get under 110 g/km.
Once again BMW has achieved this without compromising performance. 0-62 is dispatched in a brisk 8.0 seconds and top speed is 137 mph. The latest tweaks include a higher final gear ratio, lowered suspension (improving aerodynamics) and aerodynamic alloy wheels with Michelin Energy Saver tyres. A dual mass flywheel reduces low rpm harshness encouraging drivers to make use of the higher ratios.
The 3 Series remains great fun to drive with its 50:50 weight distribution and rear-wheel drive chassis combining with communicative steering to make it a more rewarding driver’s car than the competition. At the same time it can be a great cruiser with very little road or engine noise finding its way into the cabin.
With EfficientDynamics BMW has proved at a stroke that it is possible to build cars with low CO2 emissions without compromising on any of the brand’s core ideals of build quality, refinement and most importantly fun. Most impressively this has been achieved without using any expensive technology such as a hybrid system. Good to see a particulate filter is standard too.
