The EV Cup is the world’s first racing series exclusively featuring zero emission electric vehicles, and it will launch in summer 2011.
The series will be divided into three categories, with a class for race-prepared urban THINK cars and a Sports EV class for 185kph Westfield iRacers. A Prototype EV class operating in a time trial format will showcase the latest non-production electric vehicles.
MotorSport Vision Racing (MSVR), the racing division of MSV, has been appointed as the organising club for the EV Cup.
MSVR will be responsible for operating the EV Cup’s UK races, with four events already confirmed at Silverstone, Snetterton, Rockingham and Brands Hatch. The EV Cup is also hoping to host meetings in Spain, Portugal and the USA.
Each race weekend will feature qualifying rounds followed by 20-30 minute sprint races, and car batteries will be recharged at on-site facilities at each circuit. The series’ concept has already been publicly backed by several motorsport personalities including Damon Hill and former TV ‘Stig’ Ben Collins.
Grahame Butterworth, EV Cup Race Director, said: “The EV Cup is an entirely new and groundbreaking project and we wanted to work with the best organisations possible in order to make our first season a major success. For us, that’s MSVR, and we’re looking forward to developing this exciting partnership in 2011 and beyond.”
David Scott, MSVR Race Operations Manager, added: “With MSVR continuing to develop and expand, the EV Cup brings yet another exciting category to our portfolio. It really is a unique concept and a major development in eco-friendly motorsport, and we are delighted to be involved in the EV Cup’s inaugural season.”
2011 EV Cup calendar: 6 August, Silverstone; 20 August, Snetterton; 10 September, Rockingham; 6 November, Brands Hatch. Dates are to be confirmed in Spain, Portugal and the USA.
