John Gummer, Lord Deben, the recently appointed Chair of the Committee on Climate Change, is confirmed as the keynote speaker at the opening of the LowCVP Low Carbon Champions Awards.

The Awards will be held in central London on the evening of 29 January 2013 and will follow the LowCVP’s Tenth Anniversary Reception.

As an MP John Gummer was Secretary of State for the Environment during the 1990s and has been a prominent spokesperson on Climate Change issues for many years. Because of his strong environmental credentials, in 2005 David Cameron asked him to chair the Quality of Life Policy Group which was influential in the formation of Conservative policy in the lead-up to the 2010 General Election.

John Gummer left the House of Commons in 2010 and was appointed, as Lord Deben, to the House of Lords. His stated intention was to campaign on environmental and other issues associated with social justice and engagement with the European Union. His appointment to succeed Lord Adair Turner as Chair of the Committee on Climate Change was confirmed in September 2012.

The LowCVP recently announced the call for nominations for the third Low Carbon Champions Awards which will be presented at a gala event to take place at One Birdcage Walk, Westminster. The deadline for nominations for these prestigious Awards is Friday 23 November .
The Awards presentation will take place following a celebration event to mark the LowCVP’s tenth anniversary. The Anniversary Reception , to be addressed by transport minister Norman Baker MP, will celebrate the achievements of the LowCVP’s first decade and provide an opportunity to announce the Partnership’s future strategy.

The LowCVP Awards and Anniversary Reception are being held in association with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers ( IMechE ). The Champions Awards celebrate examples of outstanding and innovative practice in accelerating the shift to lower carbon vehicles and fuels and reducing road transport emissions.
