The new Mercedes-Benz C 220 BlueTEC will return 70.6mpg and emit just 103g/km CO2, and a hybrid is also due.
Two engines will be available at launch, a 1991cc, four-cylinder petrol engine in the C 200 (which can manage 53.3mpg), and a 2143cc, four-cylinder diesel engine in the C 220 BlueTEC, each available with a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearboxes.
Three engines will become available later in the year – the C 200 BlueTEC, C 250 BlueTEC and C 300 BlueTEC HYBRID.
There will be an Agility Select system allowing the driver to choose between Comfort, Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Individual modes. Eco mode will lower the shift point of the gear changes, soften the throttle response and reduce power to the heated seats and rear window and the air conditioning system.
The new C-Class will be available in SE, Sport and the AMG Line specifications, and prices start from £26,855 for the C 200 SE and £29,365 for the C 220 BlueTEC SE.
The first cars are due to be delivered in June.
