Vauxhall is introducing new engines and the Astra is now the recipient of a 1.6 CDTi offering 76.3mpg and 97g/km CO2.
The engine has already appeared in the Zafira Tourer and the Meriva.
The new engine is available in two power outputs: 110PS and 136PS, in the Astra hatchback and the Sports Tourer.
The 110PS version achieves 76.3mpg along with 97g/km CO2, with the 136PS unit returning 72.4mpg and 104g/km CO2.
Vauxhall promises that the new Euro 6-compliant engine will be quieter and more refined – features that the previous 1.7-litre diesel certainly lacked.
Vauxhall/Opel have also invested over €50 million in the development and optimisation of five and six-speed gearboxes.
The Astra 1.6 CDTi is available to order now with first deliveries expected from April.
