A free ‘Beginner’s Guide to Driving an Electric Vehicle’ online course is now available, which helps people learn about EVs – and how they are easy and fun to drive, the vehicle controls, maximising the vehicle’s range, charging an EV and planning long journeys. Many EV myths are also addressed in the video-based training.
This course has been developed by the ULEV Experience, which is funded by Nottingham City Council’s Workplace Travel Service and is a programme dedicated to supporting businesses to understand, trial and implement Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (ULEVs).
The ULEV Experience has been providing loans of electric cars and vans to Nottingham organisations, resulting in many business fleets now making the transition to EVs. However the project has also found that many people have a number of questions about how they drive an EV. Company car drivers will soon have a major incentive to switch to an electric car as Benefit in Kind company car tax will reduce to zero percent for pure electric vehicles in April 2020. This could save drivers thousands of pounds each year in tax if they switched from a petrol or diesel car to an EV – as well as resulting in significant savings on running costs.
Many Nottingham companies are already making the switch to ULEVs and are beginning to enjoy the financial benefits. By summer 2019 the ULEV Experience programme had identified that 458 ULEVs could potentially be adopted within Nottingham organisations, saving a combined total of £179,720 per year in running costs and 908 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Also, electric vehicles don’t emit NOx, and are therefore an important solution to the problem of local air quality. Large numbers of new electric cars and vans are coming to market over the next 12 months, providing an even greater choice for businesses, public sector organisations and consumers.
