Tesla is entering the massive American pick-up market with the all-electric and crazily-styled Cybertruck (apparently influenced by James Bond’s Lotus Esprit), capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds and covering up to 500 miles on one charge.
The Cybertruck will be available as Single Motor RWD, Dual Motor AWD or Tri Motor AWD. It will have adjustable air suspension that can be raised or lowered by four inches, giving ground clearance up to 16 inches.
It will also have over 1.5 tonnes of payload capacity and a towing capability of over 6 tonnes.
Tesla also says that the six-seater has a ‘nearly impenetrable exoskeleton’ and ‘Tesla armor glass’, which is presumably undergoing additional testing since the vehicle’s launch, when the glass was penetrated during a demonstration involving a metal ball being thrown by the vehicle’s designer. The load bay has a cover that you can stand on.
The Cybertruck is due to go on sale in the US in 2021, although based on the Model 3 production delays, we’d be guessing at 2022. Tesla is taking £100 deposits in the UK, and the aim is for the purchase price to be less than $40,000.
