NEDC v WLTP CO2 and BIK differences in April 2020 highlighted by BMW

BMW UK has published WLTP CO2 and benefit in kind (BIK) data for its entire range in readiness for the industry-wide change to BIK for company cars registered from 6 April 2020.

BIK calculations will then move from using NEDC CO2 data to WLTP CO2 data.

BMW says that the data ensures that company car drivers can now order any BMW or MINI with the reassurance of knowing how it will impact their tax liability for the next tax year, plus subsequent 2021/2022 and 2022/23 tax years.

Some highlights include:

BMW 3 Series Saloon 320d M Sport

On 6 April 2020 BIK will be 29 − 28%.

BMW 3 Series Saloon 330e M Sport

On 6 April 2020 BIK will reduce from 16% to 10%.

BMW X5 45e M Sport

Due to its WLTP electric range of 49 − 54 miles on 6 April 2020 the X5’s BIK will reduce from 16% to 6%.

BMW i3 120Ah

On 6 April 2020 BIK will reduce from 16% to 0%.

The above examples show that from 6 April 2020 a diesel 3 Series will have a BIK rate of 29 − 28%, the 330e plug-in hybrid will have a BIK rate of 10%, the X5 plug-in hybrid will have a BIK rate of just 6%, and the i3 will have a BIK rate of 0% – like all pure EVs.

This change to BIK rates is due to have a huge impact on the take-up of EVs by businesses.
