Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept: the electric GTI is coming

The Volkswagen GTI is reappearing as an electric car, and has been previewed by the Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept show car.

Based on the Volkswagen ID. 2all, which is due to be priced at less than 25,000 euros, the Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept will be equally as compact, and will be in showrooms in 2027, a year after the release of the ID. 2all.

The front-wheel drive Volkswagen ID. GTI Concept has a front-axle differential lock, electronically controlled by a Vehicle Dynamics Manager. The Golf GTI and Golf GTI Clubsport were the first Volkswagen models with this traction control system.

A GTI Experience Control on the centre console will enable the driver to choose the characteristics of the powertrain of the ID. GTI Concept, allowing the adjustment of the drive system, running gear, steering, sound experience and even the simulated shift points.

The golf ball design of the first GTI gear knob will reappear on the multifunction GTI Experience Control in the centre console, joining the illuminated 12 o’clock marker on the steering wheel.

At 4,104 mm in length, the ID. GTI Concept is compact, but with a relatively long wheelbase of 2,600 mm, short body overhangs, and large 20-inch alloy wheels with 245/35 performance tyres. The front bumper incorporates a black front splitter and the rear of the car features a black roof spoiler.

Volkswagen says that there will be sporty GTI versions of selected models from the all-electric ID. family.

Volkswagen is due to launch 11 new all-electric models by 2027, which it claims will offer the widest electric vehicle range of all manufacturers. By 2033 at the latest, Volkswagen will produce only electric vehicles in Europe.
