Best Home EV Chargers Compared. Which Wallbox Deserves a Place on Your Wall?

Charging at home remains the cheapest and most convenient way to run an electric car. On the right off-peak tariff, a full overnight charge can cost a fraction of what you would pay at a public rapid charger, working out at around 2 to 3p per mile against 15 to 20p on the public network. The catch is choosing the hardware. The UK market is crowded with wallboxes that all promise smart charging, app control and solar integration, and the differences only become obvious once the unit is on your wall.

To cut through the noise, we compared the home chargers most commonly fitted on British driveways in 2026, with input from Matt Tinkler, Director at nationwide EV charge point installer Impra Charge.

“The question we get asked most is simply which charger is best, and the honest answer is that it depends on how you drive, what tariff you are on and whether you have solar,” says Matt. “A charger that suits a high-mileage company car driver on an intelligent tariff is not necessarily the right choice for someone doing 5,000 miles a year who wants a tidy box on the wall and nothing to think about.”

What to Know Before You Compare

Almost every home charger sold in the UK delivers up to 7.4kW on a standard single-phase domestic supply, adding roughly 25 to 30 miles of range per hour. Charging speed is therefore rarely the deciding factor. What separates the good from the merely adequate is software: how well the charger integrates with smart tariffs, how reliable the app is, and whether it can work with solar panels or home batteries.

You will also need to choose between tethered and untethered. A tethered charger has a cable permanently attached, which is more convenient day to day. An untethered (socket-only) unit looks tidier and gives you flexibility over cable length and future vehicles, but you plug your own cable in each time.

Ohme Home Pro

Best for smart tariff users

The Ohme Home Pro has become the default recommendation for drivers on intelligent energy tariffs, and with good reason. Rather than simply starting and stopping at set times, its software talks directly to your tariff and works out the cheapest schedule to hit your target, so you tell it you want 80% by 7 am and it does the rest. It is a tethered unit with a colour screen and physical buttons, which some owners prefer to an app-only approach.

It is not the prettiest box on this list, but if minimising running costs is your priority, it is the one to beat. For anyone on Intelligent Octopus Go or a similar tariff, this is where the conversation usually starts.

Ohme ePod

Best untethered option

The ePod takes the same tariff-optimising software as the Home Pro and puts it in a smaller, socket-only unit with no screen. Everything is handled through the app. If you want Ohme’s smart charging in a more discreet package, or you prefer an untethered setup, this is the natural choice.

myenergi Zappi

Best for solar homes

Built in Britain by myenergi, the Zappi is the established choice for anyone with solar panels or plans to fit them. Its party trick is diverting surplus solar generation into your car rather than exporting it to the grid, so on a sunny day you can charge on energy you have generated yourself. It also sits within myenergi’s wider ecosystem, linking with home batteries and hot water diverters through a single app, and it works with all UK EV tariffs. For households wanting the car, the panels and the battery working as one system rather than three, it remains the benchmark.

Hypervolt Home 3 Pro

Best app experience

Hypervolt has built its reputation on software. The Home 3 Pro is a clean-looking British-designed unit with one of the most polished apps on the market, covering scheduling, tariff integration, solar-aware charging and detailed usage data. It suits owners who like visibility and control over every charging session.

Easee One

Best all-rounder for flexibility

The Norwegian-made Easee One is compact, well-designed and unusually versatile: it can be used tethered or untethered, has PEN fault protection built in so no earth rod is needed, and handles multiple chargers on one supply neatly if you run more than one EV. Solar integration requires the separate Equalizer accessory, and the app is simpler than Hypervolt’s or Ohme’s, but as a dependable all-round unit it takes some beating.

Pod Point Solo 3

Best for simplicity

Pod Point has been fitting home chargers in the UK for longer than almost anyone, and the Solo 3 reflects that: a straightforward, reliable unit at a competitive price. The app covers scheduling and usage tracking without the deeper tariff intelligence of an Ohme, but for owners who want dependable charging with minimal fuss, it remains a sensible buy.

Andersen A3

Best for design

If the charger is going on the front of your house, the Andersen A3 is the one that will not annoy you every time you pull onto the drive. The cable hides completely inside the unit, and you can specify the fascia in a range of colours and finishes to suit the property. You pay a clear premium for the design, and the smart features, while solid, are not class-leading. It is a considered purchase rather than a rational one, and none the worse for that.

How Much Does Installation Cost?

Budget from around £900 to £1,300 for a standard installation including the charger, depending on the unit you choose and the complexity of the job. Longer cable runs, detached garages or consumer unit upgrades add cost, which is why a proper survey matters before anyone quotes you a price.

“The unit is only half the story,” says Matt. “A neat, safe installation depends on the survey. We look at the consumer unit, the route the cable needs to take and the condition of the earthing before we quote, so the price a customer agrees is the price they pay. Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician working to the IET Code of Practice, and buyers should check their installer is OZEV approved and registered with NICEIC or NAPIT.”

If you rent your home or own a flat with off-street parking, you may qualify for the OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant, which rose to a maximum of £500 per socket from 1 April 2026. Owner-occupiers of houses are not eligible. A reputable installer will confirm your eligibility and handle the paperwork; Impra Charge processes grant applications on customers’ behalf as part of the installation.

The Verdict

There is no single best home EV charger, only the best one for your circumstances. On a smart tariff, the Ohme Home Pro or ePod will quietly save you the most money. With solar, the Zappi is the natural fit. If app quality matters most, look at Hypervolt; if simplicity or budget leads, the Pod Point Solo 3; and if the charger has to look good on a period property, the Andersen A3 justifies its premium.

Whichever unit you choose, the installation matters as much as the hardware. A qualified, accredited installer will match the charger to your supply, your tariff and your parking, and make sure it is fitted safely and tidily first time.
