Can you tow a caravan with an electric car?

If you’re trying to figure out whether you can tow a caravan with an electric car, then you need to know what your car’s towing capacity is.

In its simplest form, towing capacity is the quoted mass that any vehicle can safely tow according to the manufacturer. Towing capacity is further divided in two types:

• Unbraked towing capacity

• Braked towing capacity

The braked towing capacity refers to the maximum mass a vehicle can tow when whatever vehicle the car is towing is using its own brakes. Unbraked towing capacity is the maximum weight of a trailer without brakes.

This means that in all cases braked towing capacity is better than unbraked because the car can tow more weight without any issues all thanks to the fact that the caravan or whatever you are towing has more stopping power. This will also ensure that the heavier load does not overpower the car’s own brakes, causing damage. Check off road travel trailer manufacturers if you are looking for something durable and long-lasting.

In technical terms, suppose you have a car with a braked towing capacity of 1,800kg and unbraked towing capacity of 900kg. Your car would be able to tow a caravan that weighs up to 1,800kg if it comes with its own braking system and 900kg if it does not.

You will also need to factor in reduced electric driving range when towing, and you’ll struggle to park a car and a caravan at most public charging sites.

If you are wondering what the towing capacity of your electric car is, see our list below. You’ll see that some EVs have a towing capacity of 0 kg yet others such as the BMW iX can tow up to 2,500 kg.
