The Current State of the UK Car Market and a Greener Future

The UK (and many other countries) are currently undergoing an enormous shift in the public approach to being eco-conscious. There has been rapid growth in environmentally friendly cars on the roads and this reflects a change in mindset. The Government encourages this by making incentives for people to switch to green cars. This includes paying no road tax for cars with zero emissions, as well as grants for those that want to buy an electric vehicle.

A Greener Future

Additionally, the Government recently announced plans to ban the sale of all diesel and petrol cars and vans by the year 2040 as part of its clean air plan. So, what does this mean for the automotive market? All the major manufacturers have pre-empted this shift in approach and most now have at least one all-electric or hybrid automobile available. This will become their focus over the coming years as we will begin to see less and less petrol and diesel cars on the road.

Figures for Electric Cars

Whilst the sale of used petrol cars does not seem to have been hit too badly yet, the sales of used electric cars has skyrocketed. During the first half of 2014, there were just 500 electric cars registered each month, but this figure has surged to more than 3,400 per month in the last year. This is attributed to the fact that the public is becoming more environmentally conscious as there is extensive media coverage and a lot of debate surrounding the Paris Climate Agreement.

Benefits of Going Green

Additionally, the tax and financial incentives are an enormous appeal and particularly when you consider the fact that many modern all-electric cars are just as capable as their petrol counterparts. The second-hand car market is now rife with used electric cars, so motorists can find these for very affordable prices and benefit from no road tax. As with any used car purchase, it is important to find black book used car values to determine a fair price for a car. You can find this out through companies like Cap HPI.

It is an intriguing time in the UK car market with the future looking greener than ever. Whilst the days of petrol and diesel cars are numbered, motorists can look forward to driving just as capable electric vehicles whilst also benefiting from numerous Government incentives and the satisfaction of knowing that they are doing their part.
