The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer GTX 4MOTION adds sporty styling, increased power, more performance and all-wheel drive to the large electric estate.
The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer was Volkswagen’s first ever battery electric estate car, and one of the first electric estates in the upper mid-sized class to go on sale in the UK. It’s now available as a GTX model, with the aim of broadening the car’s appeal.


The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer GTX 4MOTION gains sporty styling, a power hike to 340 PS compared to the 286 PS ID.7 Tourer Pro Match that we’ve already tested, dual motor all-wheel drive and XDS+ (eXtended Dynamic) electronic differential locks, which aim to enhance handling and traction by applying gentle braking to the inside wheel when cornering, reducing understeer.
The battery is also slightly larger than the ID.7 Tourer Pro Match, at 86 kWh net (91 kWh gross).
Despite the new sporty image, the ID.7 Tourer GTX 4MOTION is a long car (4,961 mm) and it still offers a huge load space with a boot capacity of 605 litres, or 1,948 litres with the rear seats folded, and a large (although quite shallow) space for charging cables under the false boot floor. There’s limousine-levels of rear legroom.
Surprisingly, the ID.7 Tourer GTX 4MOTION only has a relatively modest towing capacity of 1,200 kg.


The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer GTX 4MOTION has a faster 0-62 mph time of 5.5 seconds compared to 6.6 seconds for the ID.7 Tourer Pro Match. To help transfer this extra performance to the road, all-wheel drive provides increased levels of grip. This makes the ID.7 Tourer GTX 4MOTION a better car for driving on country roads than the rear-wheel drive ID.7, but this isn’t an agile driver’s car – and its 5-metre length and weight of 2,339 kg don’t help in this department.
The ID.7 is actually an EV that excels at motorway travel, with its low, aerodynamic body (boasting a drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd) aiding refinement, efficiency and stability. Ride quality is comfortable and composed overall, helped by the long wheelbase, but the large 20-inch wheels and low profile tyres mean that potholes can be more easily felt, and they also contribute to some road noise.
The gear selector is a stalk that you twist on the right-hand side of the steering column, and twisting it again gives you the option of B, for increased brake regeneration. The brake pedal seems to require a lot of pressure to bring the car to a stop.
Drive modes are selectable on the touchscreen, with choices of Eco, Comfort, Sport, Traction or Individual. You can also switch off the lane keeping assist relatively easily via the Car or Assist buttons. However note that if you choose all your preferences and then briefly get out of the car it will switch itself off and you’ll lose all your settings.
The first ID.3 and ID.4 models had a touchscreen with very few sensible shortcut buttons, which meant that you had to press lots of buttons to control basic car functions. The touchscreen interface has been improved in the ID.7, with more shortcuts in the top right corner of the screen, which you can personalise with your favourites, and some climate controls along the bottom of the large 15-inch screen, which remain visible when Apple CarPlay is in use. There’s also a Climate button to bring up the full range of climate controls, which leads you to a very busy screen.
Another improvement is that the ‘slider’ controls under the touchscreen for the cabin temperature and the volume are now illuminated (amazingly these didn’t light up at night in the previous ID models). However old-fashioned (ie. unfashionable) dials to adjust the volume and the temperature would be easier to use. One thing that hasn’t changed is that there are only two switches on the door panel for the electric windows. These operate the front windows. If you want to operate the rear windows, you have to firstly press another button saying ‘rear’, then press the window switches, which is a silly system requiring too much button-pressing
As well as the touchscreen, there’s also an instrument display in front of the driver, which is relatively small, and all ID.7 and ID.7 Tourer models are equipped with an augmented-reality head-up display as standard.
The ID.7’s LED matrix headlights offer impressive levels of lighting at night.


The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer GTX 4MOTION has a WLTP combined electric driving range of 359 miles, which is impressive. After a week on test, its real-world range was averaging 320 miles.
The official WLTP energy consumption figure of 3.7 miles/kWh is slightly down on efficiency compared to the standard ID.7 Tourer, which has a figure of 4.3 miles/kWh.
The ID.7 Tourer GTX 4MOTION has a maximum ultra-rapid DC charging rate of 200 kW, which should allow a 10% to 80% charge in 26 minutes, or the replenishment of 127 miles in just 10 minutes. A 0% to 100% charge using 11 kW 3-phase AC should take 9 hours.
A heat pump – which uses heat from the powertrain to help warm the cabin in cold weather – isn’t standard, but a £1,050 option.


The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer GTX Plus 4MOTION is priced at £59,900. The specification for the ID.7 Tourer GTX includes 20-inch Skagen alloy wheels, GTX exterior styling, ventilated and heated massage seats in the front, and heated rear seats, a Harman Kardon sound system, and Volkswagen’s DCC adaptive chassis control system with driving profile selection.
Extras on our test car included Kings Red premium metallic paint with black roof (£965), Exterior Pack Plus with electronic darkening panoramic sunroof (£1,100), a Mode 2 (3-pin) mains charging cable (£190), and a swivelling towbar with 13-pin electrics and electric release (£1,125), taking the total price of our test car to £63,280.
The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is available in trim levels of Pro Match Plus, Pro S Match Plus, and GTX Plus 4MOTION. The Pro Match Plus and Pro S Match Plus are rear-wheel drive models with 77kWh and 86kWh battery sizes. There’s also the ID.7 ‘fastback’ saloon/hatchback.


The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer GTX 4MOTION makes the large estate even more desirable, with sportier styling, extra performance and all-wheel drive. It’s good to drive on country roads, but it’s really at home on long motorways journeys, helped by its WLTP combined electric driving range of 359 miles and its maximum ultra-rapid DC charging rate of 200 kW. The infotainment system has been improved compared to earlier ID models, and of course one of the main selling points of the ID.7 Tourer is its huge space for people and luggage. The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer GTX 4MOTION is awarded a Green Car Guide rating of 9 out of 10.
