Volvo V50 1.6D DRIVe

Model/Engine size: 1.6D DRIVe S Start/Stop
Fuel: Diesel
Fuel economy combined: 74 mpg

The Volvo V50 DRIVe has all the practicality of an estate with 74 mpg economy and emissions of just 99 g/km CO2.

Achieving 74 mpg is amazing for an estate car of this size and just a few years ago would have been thought to be impossible.

The increased efficiency is courtesy of a range of now familiar changes. These include improving the aerodynamics by reducing the ride height and fitting drag reducing spoilers, increasing 3rd, 4th and 5th gear ratios, reducing parasitic loads on the engine such as the power steering, and fitting low rolling resistance tyres.

However the key to achieving the super-low emissions of 99 g/km on this model is the addition of a start/stop system, which aims to ensure the engine cuts out when stationary, and restarts when moving off.

The standard specification is good on the entry-level S model, with Diamond Cut Libra alloy wheels, climate control, front, side and curtain airbags, Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS).

Build quality is impressive with high quality materials used throughout the cabin. The floating centre console is both stylish and functional, with the liberated space used as an extra storage area. The cabin is a relaxing and enjoyable place to be. Engine, road and wind noise are well controlled, and the frugal engine allows a huge range between fuel stops. The suspension is well tuned with body roll kept in check without the ride becoming overly firm. As you would expect safety is a strong point with a 5 star rating.

If you’re looking for a super-efficient and safe estate car this Volvo V50 has to be top of your list.
