Choosing an Electric Car

Welcome to our Guide to Choosing an Electric Car. Green Car Guide has LOTS of resources to help you. And we’re 100% independent, we cover ALL electric cars on sale in the UK, and we’ve been doing this since 2006! Below are our top resources to help you choose an electric car.

But firstly a few notes about the benefits of electric cars…

  • EVs have zero tailpipe emissions. That means that they don’t emit CO2, so helping in the fight against climate change – or NOx, helping with local air quality
  • EVs are cheaper to run than petrol or diesel cars (potentially one-fifth of the fuel costs of petrol cars)
  • EVs enjoy a number of financial incentives, including just 2% Benefit in Kind (BIK) for company car drivers in 2023-2024 and 2024-2025.
  • EVs have 100% torque available at virtually all times – in most people’s eyes this makes EVs better to drive than petrol or diesel cars – and faster in many cases
  • EVs are quieter and more refined to drive than petrol or diesel cars
  • There’s already a wide selection of EVs, but there’s a huge number of new makes and models of EVs coming to market over the next 12 months
  • The driving ranges of EVs are increasing, with many models having a real-world driving range of 300 miles or more
  • Most people charge at home or at work, but the UK’s public charging infrastructure is also continually growing. At the end of January 2024, there were 55,301 electric vehicle charging points across the UK, across 31,445 charging locations. This represents a 46% increase in the total number of charging devices since January 2023. For the latest EV charging statistics for see: https://www.zap-map.com/ev-stats/how-many-charging-points
  • There are now increasing numbers of second-hand electric cars
