Prior to this, we drove the Caterham from the BBC’s Media City to Cholmondeley with a collection of exotic machinery such as Ferraris and Bentleys, a McLaren, a Lancia Delta Integrale rally car, and the BAC Mono
. This drive included a detour through the tunnels underneath Manchester Airport’s runway

– so we were very smug at the wheel of an all-wheel drive Volvo estate with an official economy figure of 150mpg and acceleration from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds.
