The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), with its amazing official combined fuel economy figure of 156.9mpg, and CO2 emissions of just 42g/km, is the UK’s best selling plug-in vehicle. We’ve got one to live with for six months so we can report back in detail about this game-changing 4×4.

The headline is that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a large 4×4 SUV with a 2-litre petrol engine that can achieve a claimed 150+mpg. This figure is possible because you can plug the Outlander PHEV into your home electricity supply to charge the battery, which powers two electric motors that drive the car – for an official range of 32.5 miles on electric power. This enables the Outlander to sail through much of the NEDC economy test on electric power, so resulting in the incredible official 156.9mpg figure, and 42g/km CO2 emissions.

These figures result in an extremely attractive company car tax rate of just 5% Benefit in Kind. The UK government will also give you a £5,000 Plug-in Car Grant towards the purchase price of an Outlander PHEV – at the moment. However this is due to change on 1 March 2016, when the £5,000 Plug-in Car Grant will reduce to £2,500 for a vehicle with a zero emission range of less than 70 miles.

With the current £5,000 grant, the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid costs the same price as the diesel Outlander model.

And of course you pay no road tax, and no London Congestion Charge. If you really can achieve over 150mpg, then all the cost savings make the Outlander an extremely attractive proposition – which is why Mitsubishi has sold so many examples.

All the above sounds good on paper, but what about living with the car every day, for six months? Is the Outlander PHEV as good in real-life? We’re about to find out, and here are some of the questions we want to find the answers to:
