Zytek is an automotive engineering consultancy with specialisms in the fields of motorsport and electric/hybrid powertrain development; these areas have come together for one of its latest projects, the Honda CR-Z SGT 300.

Zytek has also worked on some other previous projects that may be familiar including the smart electric drive, the electric Modec commercial vehicle, the Gordon Murray T.27 electric city car, and the Morgan Plus E – which is unusual for being an electric car with a manual gearbox. The T.27 project was backed by a £4.5m investment from the government-backed Technology Strategy Board, and the Morgan Plus E R&D project was part-funded by a £100,000 grant from the UK government’s Niche Vehicle Network programme.

In the area of motorsport, Zytek’s engines have finished first and second at Le Mans, and the company has supplied chassis to Formula 3000 for nine years and A1GP for three years.

The technical partnership with Honda was announced in July 2012 with the aim of developing Energy Recovery Systems (ERS) specifically for motor racing. Team Mugen’s Honda CR-Z GT car has a 50kW hybrid system developed by Honda and Zytek.

Zytek has facilities in the UK to enable the company to integrate electric drivetrains into vehicles.
