BYD ATTO 3 Active

BYD is one of the biggest companies you’ve never heard of. Started in 1995 it has gone on to occupy 30 industrial parks across 6 continents and sold over 1.8 million electric cars in 2022 alone. Impressively BYD’s capability spans all of the key tech needed to build an electric car which places it in an elite club of companies able to develop and build motors, control electronics and batteries in house. If that wasn’t enough it is also active in bus, rail renewable energy and electronics.

It will come as no surprise that BYD is particularly proud of its battery packs with the ‘blade’ design and lithium ion phosphate chemistry claimed to be one of the safest on the market. Certainly the ability to drive a nail through the pack without causing a fire is impressive. It can also be charged and discharged over 5,000 times which explains why the standard battery warranty covers 125,000 miles rather than the standard 100,000 miles.

In the case of the ATTO 3 a 60.4 kWh battery is integrated into the floor of the all new e-Platform 3.0 skateboard chassis. A claimed world’s first 8 in 1 electric powertrain (containing the battery management unit, vehicle control unit, motor control unit, inverter, power distribution unit, charger, drive motor and transmission) powers the front wheels with MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspension completing the package.

Whilst the exterior is relatively tame, the interior comes with a big slice of quirk. We happen to rather like the design features which lift the interior above the mundane that often afflicts family cars, but best of all both material quality and fit and finish is good. The ‘3’ also benefits from a good mix of physical controls in addition to a dedicated instrument display and a central infotainment screen (which inexplicably turns from portrait to landscape on command) brilliantly remembers your last drive mode when switched on, has an actual gear selector and praise be a lane departure warning system that doesn’t constantly interfere.

On the road the good news continues, with brisk performance, comfortable suspension, and good refinement combining to make a strong package. In common with most front wheel drive EV’s traction can be an issue particularly in the wet, but in general the ‘3’ is composed and well engineered. Whilst on paper the official efficiency rating of 160 Wh/km is at best average for this class, it is easily achievable in the real world which means that the official range of 260 miles is realistic. This is unusual and a very welcome surprise.

The ATTO 3 combines good practicality with a 440 litre boot and space for 4 adults with strong performance, a good official range and the ability to achieve this in the real world. Winter range will also be helped by the standard fit heat pump, whilst a sensible price, 6 year vehicle warranty and 8 year 125,000 mile battery warranty all add to the appeal.

Please note that CO2 emissions quoted for electric cars are not directly comparable to diesel and petrol cars. This is because CO2 emissions quoted are calculated by Green Car Guide and include the emissions created at the power station turning fuel (e.g. gas etc) into electricity and in transmitting and distributing the electricity to an end user. They do not include the actual production of the fuel (e.g. gas extraction and refinery emissions). Petrol and diesel emissions are supplied by car manufacturers and are based solely on the fuel burnt in the engine (tailpipe emissions) and do not include the production of the fuel or distribution to a fuel station. In practice this means that electric car emissions are over-estimated relative to petrol and diesel. For instance if an electric car, a petrol car, and a diesel car are all reported to emit 100 g/km CO2, the electric car actually has lower emissions.
