Let’s get one thing out of the way immediately. If you’re thinking that the Ypsilon isn’t what you had in mind when you read ‘Chrysler’, and looks spookily like that Lancia you saw on your summer holidays, then you’d be right. The Ypsilon is a Lancia, but Fiat doesn’t want to relaunch the Italian badge here – but it does need some small cars for its latest purchase – Chrysler.

Thanks to the Fiat connection, the Ypsilon uses the characterful two-cylinder TwinAir engine which despite its diminutive size produces 85 bhp at 5,500 rpm. Even more impressive is the 107 lb ft of torque which is available at a diesel-esque 1,900 rpm. Compact, powerful and efficient (if you drive it very carefully) it’s easy to see why it has won a raft of awards including the prestigious Green Engine of the Year, Best New Engine of the Year, Sub 1-litre, and International Engine of the Year 2011.

So the baby Chrysler has a world-class engine but unfortunately that is where the good news ends. On the road the ultra soft suspension leads to poor body control and there is little to encourage the enthusiastic driver.

The biggest talking point is the styling. The Ypsilon does stand out from the crowd but not necessarily in a good way. The interior is an equally acquired taste with the instrument binnacle offset, it does smack of style over practicality. If you look beyond the styling it is disappointing that there are lots of hard plastics on show.

The Ypsilon has a great engine but that isn’t enough to hide the issues. It struggles to meet the class standards and is relatively expensive. Its one saving grace is the styling – if you get it there really is nothing else quite like it on the market. Other than its individuality the Chrysler is hard to recommend.
