Honda CR-Z 1.5 Sport

The CR-Z is the first sporty hybrid and the only current generation hybrid with a manual gearbox. These are both things that we thoroughly approve of and it would make it into the main section of the Guide but for the fact that it isn’t fast enough to appear in our sports cars section hence its appearance here.

Honda’s concept was to design a hybrid that would appeal to the heart as well as the head, something that has been lacking thus far. In order to bring the CR-Z to life Honda has drawn on the Insight parts bin with the electric motor and (shortened) chassis both being shared.

In order to give the CR-Z more poke a larger 1.5-litre petrol engine has been used in place of the Insight’s 1.3 and the CVT gearbox has been replaced by a 6-speed manual. The CR-Z is also the first Honda to get lithium-ion batteries which has liberated more torque (140 lb.ft) and power and allows a 10 second electric over-boost via an S+ steering wheel mounted button for extra overtaking punch.

We have always been firm believers that a car doesn’t have to be fast in a straight line to be fun (step forward the Issigonis Mini and MX-5) and once the road gets more involving the CR-Z comes to life. It isn’t razor-sharp but it is fun with a low driving position and little body roll encouraging some spirited driving.

The addition of lithium-ion batteries has spiced up the performance and allows the slightly gimmicky S+ over-boost function, but it is a shame that Honda has chosen to delete the entry-level specification, raising the base price significantly. However it remains a compact and relatively affordable small coupe with hybrid efficiency and a manual gearbox which in our book is a good thing.
