Honda Jazz Hybrid

Summary

Honda is sticking with its IMA hybrid system and is now rapidly rolling out new models. The latest is the Jazz which funnily enough was the first Honda to be designed from the ground up to be a hybrid but was beaten to market by the Insight and CR-Z as Honda wanted to test the waters first.

The launch of the hybrid model coincides with a mid-life refresh for the Jazz range. The Jazz has few natural competitors due to its supermini/MPV crossover concept which can make it hard to categorise. It has never set the heart racing but it is an ultra-practical car and the latest alterations make it a more rounded offering.

Honda has taken on board criticism of the ride and handling and claims to have improved both with new suspension settings, making the latest version more composed, and improved steering feel and extra weight at speed adding to the fun. The changes haven’t turned it into a sports car but it is competent.

The IMA system, which is identical to the one used in the Insight, has boosted economy, bringing CO2 emissions in range of the best diesel models, but with much lower NOx emissions and zero PM. However it doesn’t dip under the magic 100 g/km barrier and the compulsory CVT gearbox won’t be to everyone’s liking.

Designing the Honda Jazz as a hybrid means that only underfloor storage is lost leaving a good 300 litres of boot space. It is more practical than standard superminis and when NOx and PM emissions are taken into account its overall emissions are lower than diesel models, but it is more expensive and can’t match the best diesels’ fuel economy. CVT gearbox requires a test drive.
