Summary

The electric estate market has been a little slow in recent years with very limited choice, but with Vauxhall entering the market there is now a mainstream option. And you don’t get much more mainstream than the Astra so it feels like a logical place to start the Vauxhall electric estate range.

Speaking of range, the now ubiquitous 54 kWh battery pack is on show again, and in this case can deliver up to 260 miles on the official test. That translates into a usable real world range of 180 – 260 miles which isn’t too shabby, but does reflect the fact that delivering a sensible price was higher on the to do list than a 300 mile + range. Of course the other side of the range coin is recharge time so how does the Astra fare?

Well the same principle applies, with 100 kW Ultra Rapid capability a 20 – 80% charge can be covered in around 26 minutes thanks to the moderate battery size. Again perfectly usable but not cutting edge. AC is dealt with by an 11 kW onboard charger which means a full (0-100%) 7 kW home charge in 8 hours and where a 22 kW public chargepoint is available that reduces to under 6 hours.

However all of the stats count for very little if the load lugging ability is compromised by going electric. The good news is that whilst there is a small reduction compared to the petrol variant, the Sports Tourer does remain a practical proposition. With the rear seats in place you get 516 litres to play with and with the seats folded that increases to 1,553 litres.

Of course whatever you’ve got in the back, you will want to know what its like upfront. You get two 10 inch screens supported by a head up display and bonus marks….. physical buttons for ventilation controls. The seats are comfortable and there is good storage space. It is all very sensible but is lacking a bit of design flair, not helped by the ‘any colour you like as long as it is black’ colour palette.

The Astra delivers sensible range and recharging ability coupled with good load lugging credentials. It is also admirably efficient, helped by that moderately sized battery pack, and sensibly priced. The only real criticism is that is is all maybe a bit too sensible.

Estimated real world range: 180 – 260 miles
Official range: 260 miles
Official electricity consumption: 148 Wh/km
Battery pack: 54 kWh (gross) lithium ion; 8 year / 100,000 mile warranty (70% of battery capacity remaining)
Recharge time: 7 kW charge approx 8 hours (0-100%); 11 kW charge approx 5 hours 25 mins (0-100%); Rapid CCS 50 kW approx 45 mins (20 – 80%); 100 kW CCS Ultra Rapid charger 26 mins (20 – 80%)

Please note that CO2 emissions quoted for electric cars are not directly comparable to diesel and petrol cars. This is because CO2 emissions quoted are calculated by Green Car Guide and include the emissions created at the power station turning fuel (e.g. gas etc) into electricity and in transmitting and distributing the electricity to an end user. They do not include the actual production of the fuel (e.g. gas extraction and refinery emissions). Petrol and diesel emissions are supplied by car manufacturers and are based solely on the fuel burnt in the engine (tailpipe emissions) and do not include the production of the fuel or distribution to a fuel station. In practice this means that electric car emissions are over-estimated relative to petrol and diesel. For instance if an electric car, a petrol car, and a diesel car are all reported to emit 100 g/km CO2, the electric car actually has lower emissions.
