Smart is no longer the Mercedes-owned city-car specialist of old. Since 2020 it has been a 50:50 joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and China’s Geely group, designed in Germany and built in China. The new Smart range bears no relation to the previous ForTwo and ForFour models: the Smart #1 is a compact electric SUV, the #3 a coupe-SUV based on the same platform, and the new #5 a larger family SUV. All sit on Geely’s SEA architecture, shared with Volvo, Polestar and Zeekr. Smart sells direct to consumers in the UK through an agency model, with physical handover points at selected Mercedes-Benz retailers. The traditional Smart ForTwo city car has been discontinued; the concept for a replacement has recently been revealed.
