Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 updated with bigger batteries and V2L

Volkswagen has updated the ID.4 and ID.5 with bigger batteries, more power, longer range and Vehicle-to-Load capability across most of the range, with little or no impact on price.

The headline change is to the entry Pure trims, which jump from a 52kWh to a 58kWh net battery. Power rises from 170PS to 190PS and WLTP range climbs from 222 to 265 miles in the ID.4 and from 227 to 272 miles in the ID.5, a 45-mile improvement at no extra cost. The Pro and Pro 4MOTION trims gain a small net-capacity bump from 77 to 79kWh and, in the 4MOTION case, more power: 299PS instead of 286PS, with range up to 341 miles in the ID.4 Pro 4MOTION.

The sporty GTX versions go the other way, with net capacity slightly smaller (77kWh, down from 79kWh) but range fractionally up thanks to efficiency gains elsewhere 326 miles in the ID.4 GTX, 331 miles in the ID.5 GTX. Price changes across the range are modest, at £0 for the Pure Essential and Match and up to £655 elsewhere.

Vehicle-to-Load and bidirectional charging are added across the line-up, allowing the cars to power external appliances using one of two new optional adapters. Other changes include physical buttons on the steering wheels (a long-running customer request), Traffic Assist now including Front Cross protection for pedestrians and cyclists, an improved driver attention monitoring system and faster inductive phone charging at 15W (up from 5W). A more efficient heat pump is now optional, and the ID.4 Pro 4MOTION’s braked trailer load limit has been increased from 1,200kg to 1,800kg.

The Pure Essential trims gain larger 19-inch steel wheels as standard, and the Pure Match now comes with an electric tailgate as standard.

Prices for the updated ID.4 and ID.5 start from £36,995 OTR. Volkswagen UK is re-applying for Electric Car Grant eligibility for the updated models, with confirmation expected later.
