Renault has revealed the Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept at the 2026 Roland-Garros French Open – a four-wheel-drive electric “beach adventurer” that uses a second electric motor on the rear axle to give the Renault 4 platform off-road capability.
The JP4x4 is the fourth concept based on the new Renault 4 E-Tech electric, following the FL4WER POWER, Savane 4×4 and Vision 4Rescue. The name is a tribute to the original JP4 of 1981 and the Plein Air of 1969, but Renault also points out that JP could stand for journée à la plage – a day at the beach.
The styling reflects that. Emerald Green bodywork contrasts with a bright orange interior, a surfboard is strapped to the roof and skateboards are stowed in the boot. The doors and openwork cross-shaped roof are both openable, the tailgate drops down pick-up-style for easy loading, and there’s no soft top. Bucket seats reinterpret the “Egyptian mummy” headrest design from 1970s Renaults, with mixed-fabric upholstery and a textile-finished dashboard.
Underneath, the JP4x4 sits on the same platform as last year’s Renault 4 Savane 4×4 Concept, with ground clearance raised by 15mm versus the standard car. Front and rear tracks are widened by 10mm each side and the car wears 18-inch wheels with Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ 225/55 tyres.
The key technical addition is a second electric motor on the rear axle for permanent all-wheel drive. Renault says this improves agility on the road as well as opening up sandy, stony and unpaved terrain – demonstrating that the RGEV small platform can support a four-wheel-drive B-segment electric car if the business case appears.
The JP4x4 is being shown alongside the Renault 4 Roland-Garros E-Tech electric show car (a Plein Sud canvas-roof variant in Roland-Garros trim), plus the Twingo E-Tech electric and Renault 5 Roland-Garros E-Tech electric, on the Renault stand from 18 May.
