Background

Ford has been late to the electric car party, but the company is now making up for lost time. The first mass-production Ford EV was the Mustang Mach-E, and we’ve now had the Explorer and the Capri – as well as electric vans such as the Transit. There’s already been a higher performance GT version of the Mustang Mach-E, and now we have the ‘Rally’ variant. Is this an irrelevant toy or is it a significant car that we should give attention to?

Design & Engineering

The Mustang Mach-E Rally features a 91 kWh lithium-ion battery (usable capacity) and a ‘tuned’ version of the Mustang Mach-E GT dual motor electric powertrain, delivering permanent all-wheel drive, 487 PS of power and a whopping 950 Nm of torque.

It has unique rally-tuned suspension that has been raised 20mm compared to the Mustang Mach-E GT and is equipped with specially tuned springs, MagneRide shock absorbers and 385mm Brembo front brake discs.

The Mach-E Rally gains gloss white 20-inch rally-style alloy wheels, which Ford says are “inspired by the long history of Ford rally vehicles”, and it has Michelin CrossClimate tyres that provide more sidewall and loose surface grip compared to the Mustang Mach-E GT.

Our test car may have been electric, but it was certainly loud from a visual point of view, in ‘Grabber Yellow’ with black stripes, black roof, white wheels and a massive rear spoiler that takes inspiration from the Focus RS.

Unlike the exterior, the interior doesn’t feature lots of rally design touches, although it does have rally-style seats and rubber mats rather than carpet, and the dashboard has a few more interesting styling details than the original Mach-E that we tested.

It also has lots of space, with good rear legroom and a boot capacity of 402 litres which increases to 1,420 litres with the rear seats folded down. There’s also an 81-litre front trunk (frunk) under the bonnet.

Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Rally Driving Experience

Ford seems to have engineered the standard Mustang Mach-E to deliver a driving experience that is relaxed and laid back like an American muscle car. The GT version adds performance and a firmer ride.

One of the first things that you’ll notice about the Mach-E Rally is the agile and adjustable chassis – something that is very unusual in an EV weighing 2,348 kg and that certainly isn’t the case with the Volkswagen-based Ford Capri. The Mach-E GT Rally feels alive, and that results in a rewarding driving experience.

The Michelin CrossClimate tyres, apart from assisting with the ride comfort, are incredibly capable in mud, snow and ice, as well as being more durable off-road – we know this from fitting these tyres to personal cars for many years. They’re also very capable on road, but they don’t have the ultimate grip of performance-focused tyres when pushed to the limit. This is another factor in why the Mach-E GT Rally offers a level of fun that is absent in most other EVs.

This is amplified by the Mach-E GT Rally’s drive modes: Whisper, for everyday driving, Active, for more response, and Untamed (which appears as ‘Untame’ on the touchscreen), which is for the full performance offering. But there’s more: a ‘RallySport’ drive mode. Ford’s official line is that this is designed for off-road driving and adapts electronic control systems to allow bigger slides, a linear throttle response for better control, and more aggressive damping for better handling in loose corners. The steering also gets heavier. The key thing to note is that the RallySport drive mode switches off the traction control system, which, when combined with 487 PS of power, 950 Nm of torque and tyres that aren’t the grippiest at their limit on tarmac, results in the muscle-car-meets-rally-car character that may appeal to drivers wanting something other than the normal EV driving experience.

Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Rally

The Mach-E GT Rally has a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 3.6 seconds, which is almost supercar territory, but its acceleration, especially mid-range, is delivered in a relaxed way so it doesn’t feel shove-in-the-back instant.

You may be thinking that all the rally car capability comes at a cost to motorway manners, but no, the Mach-E GT Rally is also quiet, refined and comfortable on the motorway.

The driving experience is helped by selecting ‘propulsion sound’, which adds a sporty soundtrack that is appropriate to the lazy V8-inspired driving experience; you can turn this off for long motorway journeys.

The Mustang’s gear selector is a circular dial between the front seats. A button in the middle, which is for Park on most other cars, on the Mach-E is ‘L’, which, to add to the confusion, is ‘B’ on most other cars, ie. increased brake regeneration. You can also select One Pedal Drive on the touchscreen.

And while we’re on the subject of the touchscreen, it’s tall, with a circular volume control at the bottom of the screen. There’s one thing that the infotainment system doesn’t have but it needs: a home button. But one brilliant feature on the steering wheel is an easily-missed button that you can press to switch off the lane departure warning system; the alternative would be to delve into various menus and sub-menus on the screen to do this, which is the case for many other car controls.

Conclusion

The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Rally offers a unique electric driving experience, combining the laid-back muscle car feel of the standard Mustang model with off-road rally capability. It delivers better ride quality and is more comfortable than the GT model, thanks to revised suspension as well as the Michelin CrossClimate tyres, which offer impressive grip off-road, but allow some movement when driving enthusiastically on tarmac. Critically, the Mach-E GT Rally offers a chassis that is agile and adjustable, combined with steering that has feel, and a powertrain that is eager to accelerate. It makes you wonder why Ford didn’t use its Mach-E platform for the Capri, which is based on the Volkswagen ID.5, and which, in comparison, doesn’t feel alive at all. Aside from the rewarding driving experience, the performance and the all-wheel drive traction, the Mach-E GT Rally offers practical amounts of space and the potential of a 300-mile+ range. The main downside is the price – at £76,790, it can’t be described as affordable. But for offering a unique, fun, playful and rewarding experience that makes you want to find an excuse to take the car for a drive, the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Rally is awarded a Green Car Guide rating of 10 out of 10.
