Battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in August 2025 increased by 14.9% to achieve a 26.5% market share, the highest this year, and the fourth highest on record. This is against a backdrop of UK new car registrations declining by 2.0% in August to 82,908 units, during what is normally the quietest month of the year.
The year-to-date market share for EVs is 21.9%, with 2025’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate target being 28%. The EV market share in September – usually the second biggest month of the year due to the new number plate kicking in – is expected to be high as a result of the Electric Car Grant, which around a quarter of BEV models are now eligible for.
According to figures from the SMMT, in the first eight months of 2025 the new car market is up 2.1% to a five-year peak of 1.265 million – although it still remains 16.7% down on pre-pandemic levels.
