The Vauxhall Frontera Electric is priced from £22,495 for the model with the 44 kWh battery, which is £2,400 cheaper than the petrol version; there’s also a 54 kWh model which delivers a driving range of 253 miles.
Electric cars have been more expensive than petrol equivalents in virtually all cases to date; this has now changed with the arrival of the Vauxhall Frontera, which starts at £22,495 – £2,400 cheaper than the petrol Frontera. This reflects Vauxhall’s desire to ‘make electrification available to all’.

Measuring 4,385mm in length, the C-segment Frontera sits between the B-segment Mokka (4,151mm) and the Grandland (4,650mm) which is at the very top of the C-segment in Vauxhall’s SUV line-up. So this new Frontera is much smaller than the original Frontera (4,699mm) and of course the new version isn’t a proper off-roader.
The Frontera has a boot capacity of 460 litres, or 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded. It also has roof rails with a 240kg capacity.
The Frontera Electric has two battery options: 44 kWh or Extended Range 54 kWh, with an electric motor delivering front-wheel drive.

The Vauxhall Frontera Electric shares attributes with other electric models in the Stellantis Group, including being quiet, refined and easy to drive, and it also has comfortable ride quality.
Electric motors don’t have the turbo lag of petrol engines, but the Frontera Electric only produces 113PS of power and 125Nm of torque, which results in a 0-62mph acceleration time of 13 seconds, so performance is extremely leisurely. The model with the 44kWh battery shaves 0.2 seconds off this time, delivering a 0-62mph time of 12.8 seconds.
One thing to note is that the Frontera Electric doesn’t offer the choice of any drive modes – Vauxhall says this is part of the ‘simplification’ of the driving experience – so if you feel like selecting Sport to enable it to pull out of junctions a bit quicker, you can’t.
Another change from most Stellantis models is the gear selector – rather than the options of P, R, N, D and B – the latter for increased brake regeneration – B is replaced with C for ‘Comfort’, which is the opposite of B – it means the car coasts rather than using regenerative braking.
Other elements of the cabin will be familiar to drivers of current Vauxhall models – there are two 10-inch widescreen displays, some physical controls for heating and ventilation, and physical buttons to disengage speed and lane departure warning systems.

The Vauxhall Frontera Electric 54kWh Extended Range variant has a WLTP combined driving range of up to 253 miles; the 44kWh Frontera Electric has a range of up to 186 miles (WLTP). Both have electrical consumption of 3.9 miles/kWh and a maximum DC rapid charging rate of 100 kW, offering a 20-80% charge in 26 minutes. The Frontera has an 11kW AC on-board charger fitted as standard, enabling a 20-80% charge in 3 hours 25 minutes from an 11kW AC public charge point. A 20-80% charge from a 7kW home charger takes 5 hours 5 minutes.

The Vauxhall Frontera Electric with a 44kWh battery is priced at £23,995, compared with £24,855 for the equivalent petrol model, but the electric model’s cost is reduced further by £1,500 to £22,495 thanks to eligibility for the government’s Electric Car Grant. Prices for the Extended Range 54kWh model start at £25,995 (rising up to £29,195).
The Vauxhall Frontera Electric is available in Design, GS and Ultimate trims.
Satellite navigation is included as standard, and every Frontera features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging and a rear-view camera.
£500 of charging credit is available, and the battery warranty is for eight years/100,000 miles.
The petrol Frontera comes with a seven-seat option but this isn’t available for the electric model.
The entire Vauxhall electric car range qualifies for the new UK Government Electric Car Grant (ECG), saving customers £1,500 off the list price. All Vauxhall electric cars are also priced below the £40,000 threshold for the Expensive Car Supplement, resulting in significant savings in road tax (VED).

The Vauxhall Frontera Electric has a very attractive price, which is less than the petrol model. It’s quiet, refined and comfortable to drive, but don’t expect any performance, and there are no drive modes to choose from. And it’s a shame that the petrol model is available with seven seats, but this isn’t an option for the electric version. The Vauxhall Frontera Electric is awarded a Green Car Guide rating of 8 out of 10.
