Background

Genesis is the luxury brand of Hyundai, and the G80 is its limousine-like saloon. It’s available with an electric powertrain, and it’s been updated for 2025. This car won’t be on the radar of most people, which is a shame, because it’s an excellent product.

Design & Engineering

The Genesis Electrified G80 is a long, low saloon. It’s now only available in the UK in extended wheelbase form, which means that it’s 130mm longer than the previous model, taking its overall length to 5,135mm. The extra length translates to even more legroom for rear seat occupants, who also get buttons in the centre of the rear seats to close the rear doors automatically, to save having to reach for the door handle. If even this is too much effort, then the driver can also close the doors with buttons in the front centre console (and this can also be done using the key fob). If you push the doors to close them from the outside, they will finish the process automatically using their soft-close function.

So the rear of the G80 is very spacious and luxurious – as is the front – but despite the car’s length of more than 5 metres, the boot is relatively small, at just 354 litres. This is due to the batteries taking up space in the boot – a result of the G80 being based on a platform designed for a petrol car rather than having a bespoke EV architecture.

The Electrified G80 has a new, larger 94.5 kWh battery (up from 87.2 kWh in the previous model), powering dual electric motors, delivering all-wheel drive.

Genesis Electrified G80 Driving Experience

The Genesis Electrified G80 feels like a magic carpet from the moment you drive off. Ride quality is super-comfortable (the G80 has ‘Preview Electronic Control Suspension’), overall refinement is excellent, and the interior is an incredibly hushed environment (‘Active Road Noise Cancelling’ technology is another feature). The Electrified G80 has to be one of the most enjoyable ways to cover lots of motorway miles.

Yet despite the limousine-like ride quality designed to look after the comfort of passengers, the G80 is also extremely rewarding to drive, with well-judged handling from what has the feel of a rear-biased all-wheel drive set up (even though officially power and torque are distributed 50/50 front-to-rear). It also has better body control than should be expected for a car with such comfortable ride quality and a 2,410 kg kerb weight. The G80 sits close to the ground, which helps in the handling department.

Even the steering has decent feel, something that’s not always guaranteed for cars in this class, and our test car had rear-wheel steering (a £1,120 option), which works with the front-wheel steering to improve manoeuvrability at low speeds. All controls, including the brakes, are well weighted.

You also get impressive performance, with 370 PS of power and 700 Nm of torque delivering a 0-62 mph time of 5.1 seconds. You can even easily switch off the traction control, as well as the lane departure warning system and the speed warning.

And then there’s the interior. Aside from the excellent driving position, you’ve got a rotary dial for a gear selector, conveniently positioned between the two front seats, as well as steering wheel-mounted paddles to change the level of brake regeneration, which is the best solution to do this.

The new model also features Genesis’ selectable Virtual Gear Shift, which simulates the behaviour of a conventional gearbox from an internal combustion engine car. There’s a secret way to activate this feature: you need to hold both paddle shifters on the steering wheel for three seconds.

And you can change drive modes easily by the touch of a button, with the options being Eco, Comfort, Sport, Snow and hold for ‘Chauffeur’, the latter mode adjusting the suspension to a softer setting and modifying the throttle and brake pedal response to be smoother.

A change for the 2025 model year G80 is the merging of the central touchscreen with the driver’s display, giving one 27-inch wide screen, with super-clear graphics. Below the touchscreen is an excellent climate control screen, with all heating and ventilation controls easily visible and accessible, which is so much more user-friendly than cars that have all climate controls buried in the touchscreen.

As well as user-friendly shortcuts for the infotainment system, you also get an i-Drive-style rotary controller for the touchscreen, which is much easier than having to reach to the screen all the time to control the functions.

One great feature of Genesis models is the ‘Sounds of Nature’ in Media, which gives you a selection of music including Outer Space Communication and Meditation – very appropriate for the chilled experience of the G80.

Genesis Electrified G80 Electric Range and Charging

The updated Genesis Electrified G80 has a WLTP combined electric driving range of 354 miles, an increase from the 323 miles of the previous model. After a week on test, the real-world range averaged 300 miles (in winter). The G80 has a WLTP consumption figure of 3.4 miles per kWh.

Despite being based on an internal combustion engine platform, the G80 has 800V architecture which is capable of a maximum ultra-rapid DC charging rate of 187 kW, which should result in a 10% to 80% charge of the 94.5 kWh battery taking 25 minutes.

There’s also an on-board charger for 7 kW (single phase) or 11 kW (three-phase) AC charging. An 11 kW 10% to 80% charge should take 7 hours 33 minutes.

The Electrified G80 has a heat pump, and an optional Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Pack which includes an adaptor to enable external appliances to be plugged into the charging port and be powered by the vehicle’s battery.

Conclusion

The Genesis Electrified G80 is an extremely comfortable way to travel for passengers, but it’s also a lot more of a rewarding driver’s car than it should be. In fact, ride, handling, grip and performance are all excellent. Add to that the user-friendly dashboard design, the ultra-rapid charging, and the longer range (although not as long as some rivals), and the G80 is a brilliant all-round package. The only real downside is the boot, which is small in relation to the size of the car, and this is a result of the G80 being based on an ICE rather than an electric platform. It’s also not at the affordable end of the EV price spectrum, but there are more expensive electric luxury saloons. The Genesis Electrified G80 is awarded a Green Car Guide rating of 9 out of 10, but it’s likely to remain a very niche choice for UK buyers.
