Background

Citroen aims to offer vehicles that are as affordable as possible, so in the face of lots of expensive electric SUVs being on sale, the e-Berlingo is a breath of fresh air. The last e-Berlingo had a relatively limited driving range, so do the latest updates make this already practical vehicle even more practical?

Design & Engineering

The Citroen e-Berlingo is available as a van or as an MPV (‘van with seats’), which provides the space of a van with the ability to accommodate five people in the case of the M (Medium) model (4,410 mm in length), as tested, and the XL model (4,753mm in length) can be specified with two extra seats to accommodate seven.

As well as a large boot – 775 litres, or 3,500 litres with the rear seats folded – the e-Berlingo has lots of storage everywhere, ranging from a compartment above the driver’s instrument display to space in the roof above the front occupants: the ‘Modutop’ glass roof has a storage console underneath it running down the centre of the length of the vehicle, and also features a long light unit. Rear seat passengers get foldable trays. However despite all the storage areas, there’s just a big gap of nothing between the two front seats. This area would be useful to instead house drinks and phone holders, as the only drinks holder is a very small receptacle on top of the dashboard.

If you opt for the longer ‘XL’ version, with seven seats, you get 4,000 litres of luggage space if you fold all the seats down. The third row of seats are also removable, as well as being able to slide backwards and forwards.

The e-Berlingo has sliding rear side doors which are really helpful in tight parking spaces.

Under the skin is a 52kWh lithium-ion battery powering an electric motor delivering front-wheel drive.

The e-Berlingo has a (braked) towing rating of 750 kg.

Citroen e-Berlingo Driving Experience

Because the Citroen e-Berlingo is essentially a van, you get a van-like driving position. But because the e-Berlingo is electric, it’s so much better to drive than a petrol or diesel van. It’s much quieter and more refined, and 100% torque at all times results in more responsive acceleration. Ride quality is also comfortable.

Because it’s front-wheel drive, there’s always the chance that all that torque can result in wheelspin under acceleration.

You get the familiar Stellantis gear selector, although the ‘B’ button has disappeared, and instead there are steering wheel-mounted paddles to control the level of regenerative braking, along with three drive modes: Power, Comfort and Eco.

The central touchscreen doesn’t have any shortcuts down the side of the screen (it did on the last model), so if you’re using Apple CarPlay you can’t access any car controls. Under the touchscreen are buttons for Vehicle and Home, the latter taking you to a screen with the ability to select items such as the radio.

There are separate heating and ventilation controls, although the temperature controls aren’t lit at night. Unusually, there are no heated seats, but there is a heated steering wheel.

Citroen e-Berlingo Electric Range and Charging

The official WLTP electric driving range of the 2025 Citroen e-Berlingo is 213 miles – an improvement on the 174 miles of the previous model. After a week on test in November the real-world range was averaging 180 miles. Electrical consumption is 3.6 miles per kWh (the van aerodynamics don’t help in the efficiency or range departments).

The e-Berlingo can rapid charge at up to 100 kW DC, when a 0%-80% charge should take around 30 minutes. The onboard 7.4 kW AC charger should provide a full charge in around 7 hours 30 minutes. An optional 11kW on-board charger is also available (for £300), reducing the charging time to 4 hours 45 minutes from a workplace charger served by a three-phase electricity supply.

A heat pump, which is designed to minimise loss of battery range when heating the cabin in cold weather, is a £350 option.

One thing to avoid is opening the sliding rear passenger side door when the vehicle is plugged in as you would smash the door into the charging port.

Price And Model Range

The Citroen e-Berlingo is available in two lengths: M, with five seats, from £29,740, and XL, from £32,140. XL trim can be specified with two optional seats, turning it into a 7-seater. There are also two trim levels, Plus and Max. There’s just one EV powertrain option. Interestingly, the last generation of e-Berlingo was launched only as an EV, now you can also get the MPV with petrol and diesel powertrains. Our Citroen e-Berlingo Max test car was priced at £31,240, or £33,810 with options.

Conclusion

The Citroen e-Berlingo in MPV form offers seating for five or seven people with a lot more space than your average car, and prices start at under £30,000. Thanks to its electric powertrain, it’s better to drive than an equivalent petrol or diesel vehicle. The latest model also offers updated styling and an increased electric driving range. The Citroen e-Berlingo is awarded a Green Car Guide rating of 8 out of 10.
