Background

The British MG brand has been resurrected by the Chinese company SAIC and electric MGs have been selling well, with value for money being a key reason. The electric MG range is expanding, and now we have the MGS6 EV. It joins the cheaper MGS5 EV, another C-segment SUV, and the MG IM6 SUV, also a C-segment SUV, designed to be more of an upmarket offering (the ‘S’ prefix denotes an SUV body style). That means that MG now has three C-segment SUVs on sale. So should you choose the MGS6 EV?

Design & Engineering

The MGS6 EV shares the same platform as the MG4 EV hatchback and the MGS5 EV, with a 77 kWh NCM (Nickel Cobalt Manganese) battery and a choice of three trim levels.

The MGS6 EV SE Long Range features a single (rear) motor with a total power output of 180kW and a WLTP combined range of 329 miles.

The MGS6 EV Trophy Long Range, as tested, offers the same 329 miles capability, power and rear-wheel drive configuration but has more equipment.

The MGS6 EV Trophy Dual Motor offers all-wheel drive (not available on the MGS5), with power output increased to 266kW, delivering a 0-62 mph time of just 5.1 seconds with a WLTP combined range of 301 miles.

The MGS6 EV is longer than the MGS5 EV (4,708 mm v 4,476 mm), and has a larger, 674-litre boot (compared to 453 litres), which extends to 1,910 litres with the rear seats folded. There’s no space under the boot for charging cables (although removing packaging under the boot would help), but there’s a very large front ‘frunk’ which offers up to 124 litres of storage.

Rear legroom is also generous, and there’s a large storage space under the floating centre console.

MGS6 EV Driving Experience

The MGS6 EV, in Trophy Long Range trim as tested, is rear-wheel drive, which means that the car’s handling is basically rewarding. However don’t expect lots of oversteer thrills, because the traction control system ensures that grip levels are good, even on cold and wet winter roads. Ride quality is also comfortable on most road surfaces.

MG says that in response to customer feedback, the MGS6 EV features some physical dials and buttons to control main functions such as heating, ventilation and the audio system. We’re all in favour of this, and the dials and buttons are user-friendly, however they’re not particularly stylish from a design point of view.

However there are two car functions that don’t have quick-access physical controls, and both would really benefit from this: drive modes (consisting of Normal, Sport, Comfort, Snow and Custom), and brake regeneration levels, both of which are buried in the 12.8-inch touchscreen, and need too many button-presses to select. If you choose your preferred drive mode and/or regen braking level you’ll have to select your preference all over again every time you re-start the car because they revert to default settings. And if you’re using Apple CarPlay, every time you have to go to a screen such as for drive modes you lose the CarPlay shortcut button on the screen, so you have to go back to the home screen first to return to CarPlay.

There’s a rotary gear selector on the centre console, which is convenient, but it’s too easy to inadvertently select the middle (and very rarely needed) setting of Neutral rather than Drive or Reverse.

And although you can adjust settings for temperature, fan and media volume using physical dials and buttons, if you want to choose where the ventilation comes from, you’ll need to bring up the climate window on the touchscreen – which requires selecting the home screen first.

As with most Chinese cars, there can be lots of beeping for various driving assistance features. Thankfully MG has included one button to switch off the MG Pilot (ADAS) settings, which is helpful, but you may also need to mute the volume for some other audible warnings.

The MGS6 EV’s touchscreen is slow to start, and the view from the reversing camera is also slow to appear on the screen, and it doesn’t appear to perform well in the dark.

The steering wheel feels quite big and the seat base has no adjustment for angle, so the driving position may not be perfect for everyone. The driver’s seat also slides back automatically when you stop the car, but it didn’t automatically slide forward again to the previous position when we started the car.

And the tailgate on our test car had issues with not opening fully and not closing properly.

MGS6 EV Electric Range and Charging

The MGS6 EV Trophy Long Range has a WLTP combined electric driving range of 329 miles. After a week on test in December the real-world range was averaging 250 miles. The MGS6 has a maximum rapid charging rate of 144 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% DC charge in 38 minutes. MG claims an official consumption figure of 4.9 miles/kWh – we struggled to average more than 4.0 miles/kWh in winter.

The MGS6 has a number of features that aid aerodynamic efficiency, such as an Active Grille Shutter System, front wheel deflectors, and low air resistance aero wheel covers. MG says that these items contribute to almost 30 extra miles of electric range.

The MGS6 uses a 77kWh battery as standard, while the MGS5 EV Long Range model has a 61.1kWh battery, which gives a range of up to 298 miles.

Price And Model Range

The MGS6 SE Long Range is priced at £37,995, the MGS6 Trophy Long Range (as tested) costs £40,995, which means that it just falls into the ‘expensive car supplement’ category for road tax (the current £40,000 threshold rises to £50,000 from April 2026). The MGS6 Trophy Dual Motor is priced at £43,995.

In comparison, the MGS5 EV SE Long Range is priced at £30,995, and the Trophy Long Range costs £33,495.

All variants have a High Definition 10.25-inch Driver Display and 12.8-inch infotainment screen, with Trophy models featuring a Head Up Display as well as heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and an 11-speaker audio system.

The MGS6 EV AWD Trophy Dual Motor has a power output of 361PS with 540Nm of torque, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds.

Conclusion

The MGS6 is an electric C-segment SUV – as is the existing MGS5. The MGS6 is slightly longer with a larger boot, but it also has a higher price – around £7,000 more than the equivalent MGS5 models. The MGS6 is a decent car overall, but we’re struggling to see how the higher price is justified primarily by a longer body, a larger boot, a slightly longer range and some extra equipment. The MGS6 EV is awarded a Green Car Guide rating of 7 out of 10.
