Background

The UK government’s Electric Car Grant offers a £1,500 or a £3,750 discount off the price of electric cars that meet certain sustainability criteria, and the Ford Tourneo E Courier is one of only a few vehicles that qualify for the higher £3,750 amount. So with the Tourneo E Courier available for under £30,000, should this be on your MPV shortlist?

Design & Engineering

The Ford Tourneo E Courier may look like a five-seater van (yes, it is the passenger version of the E-Transit Courier van), but it’s actually based on the same ‘Ford Global B platform’ as the Ford Puma. The boxy body shape results in a large boot with 570 litres of space up to the parcel shelf, and up to 1,188 litres to the roof with the rear seats up, expanding to 2,162 litres with the 60/40 split rear seats folded. The rear seats can fold down, and then fold forward to give a flat load area. The Tourneo E Courier is ideal for dogs due to access to the boot being lower than in SUVs.

Access to the rear seats is via two sliding side doors, which is helpful in narrow parking spaces. Despite the large boot, rear legroom is tighter than you might expect.

There’s also a 44-litre frunk (front trunk) for the charging cables. In the cabin there’s a storage area on the floor between the front seats, with a compartment for two drinks which lifts out. There’s a high roof, with a storage compartment above the heads of the two front seat occupants.

We think it looks good (especially with the ‘Bursting Green’ colour of our test car) with a lot more character than the very bland previous generation (combustion engine) Tourneo Courier.

The Ford Tourneo E Courier has a relatively small 45kWh battery and a 136PS electric motor delivering front-wheel drive. It has a towing capacity of 750 kg.

Ford Tourneo E Courier Driving Experience

Because it’s based on the same platform as the Ford Puma, the Ford Tourneo E Courier is good to drive. The electric powertrain helps to deliver impressive levels of refinement, although you still get a driving position that’s more van-like than car-like.

There’s a choice of four drive modes – Normal, Eco, Sport and Slippery – and there’s even a (small) button on the dashboard to change the drive modes, which is good, because they’re quite hidden away on the touchscreen, along with the i-Pedal feature and driver assistance settings.

Sport mode delivers rapid responses, but the front-wheel drive layout means that the torque from the electric motor can result in wheelspin.

Unlike most new cars, if you have the Tourneo E Courier in Sport mode when you switch it off, it usefully re-starts in Sport mode (and the same applies to the heated seats and heated steering wheel).

The gear selector is a stalk on the right-hand side of the steering column, with the options of R, N, D, and a button for ‘L’, which stands for ‘Low’, and usually appears as ‘B’ in other EVs, giving increased levels of brake regeneration.

Ride quality is decent on smooth roads but large potholes and speed bumps can transmit through the suspension.

The 12-inch touchscreen provides a clear image from the reversing camera.

Ford Tourneo E Courier Electric Range and Charging

The Ford Tourneo E Courier has a WLTP combined range up to 177 miles, which is less than some competitors. After a week on test in January the real-world range was averaging 155 miles, which is a relatively low loss of range for winter, and this is likely to be helped by the standard heat pump which helps to heat the cabin in cold weather with minimal impact on the battery range (the cabin heating did feel effective).

The Tourneo E Courier has a consumption figure of 3.6 miles/kWh, which is reasonable for a vehicle with a van-based body style. It has a maximum rapid charging rate of 100 kW, which should deliver a 10%-80% DC charge in around 35 minutes.

Conclusion

The Ford Tourneo E Courier features stylish design, it’s good to drive, and it offers lots of luggage space. The official driving range, at 177 miles, could be better. However the big news is that the Tourneo E Courier is one of the relatively few vehicles that’s eligible for the full £3,750 Electric Car Grant, so if you’re in the market for an electric five-seat MPV, it’s good value. The Ford Tourneo E Courier is awarded a Green Car Guide rating of 7 out of 10.
